ACWA Power Director Calls Azerbaijan a Potential Green Energy Hub for Europe
On January 10, Mohammad Abunayyan, Executive Director of ACWA Power, stated in an interview with the AnewZ TV channel that Azerbaijan’s developed energy system and strong capacity for expansion position the country to become a green energy hub for Europe and other regions.
During the interview, Abunayyan emphasized that ACWA Power views Azerbaijan as a central element of a broader regional vision. He noted that the company’s interest extends beyond the country itself to neighboring markets that could also evolve into green energy hubs. This approach underpins plans to develop solar and wind power, energy storage systems, green hydrogen projects, and water desalination facilities, which are already reflected in the company’s recent projects.
He expressed gratitude to Ilham Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan, for his strategic vision and leadership. He emphasized that the official opening of the 240 MW Khizi-Absheron wind farm demonstrates the successful implementation of large-scale green energy initiatives, stating, "Thanks to his vision and true leadership, we were able to implement this large-scale project".
Abunayyan stated that while many countries view the energy transition primarily through the lens of alternative energy sources, the president articulated a broader understanding of the process at COP29. He stressed that "the energy transition is not about focusing on a single energy source" but rather about optimizing and complementing all resources through cooperation and economic justification.
According to Abunayyan, this vision enables Azerbaijan to develop a comprehensive energy transition and green energy strategy. This includes building a balanced energy system and the necessary infrastructure. He also emphasized the transparency and investor-friendly nature of the country’s investment environment, stating that "any investor in Azerbaijan receives fair treatment and predictable conditions".
He noted that ACWA Power began operations in Azerbaijan amid significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. However, he emphasized that despite supply chain constraints and transportation over distances exceeding 10,000 kilometers, the Azerbaijani government remained a reliable partner by providing consistent support.
Regarding the Khizi-Absheron wind farm, Abunayyan emphasized that the project consists of two independent power plants and stands out for the exceptional quality of its wind resources. He described them as among the best globally and stressed that the project generates real economic value through local content, job creation, and the expansion of economic opportunities.
