Aliyev And Overchuk Discuss Recent Situation in Iran, Trade Growth, Transport Connectivity and AZAL Aircraft Crash Resolution
On March 2, Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, received Alexey Overchuk, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation and Co-Chair of the Intergovernmental Commission. During the meeting, the Russian delegation expressed sincere gratitude to the Azerbaijani leadership for their prompt assistance in evacuating Russian citizens from the Islamic Republic of Iran amid the complex regional situation.
During the discussion, both sides exchanged views on the broader agenda of Azerbaijan–Russia relations. They referred to the agreements reached by the leaders of Azerbaijan and Russia during their meeting in Dushanbe on October 9, 2025, and emphasized taking comprehensive practical steps to resolve issues stemming from the crash of the AZAL aircraft on December 25, 2024.
The talks also focused on expanding mutually beneficial cooperation in the economy, trade, investment, industry, and transport-logistics sectors. Prospects for regional transport connectivity were discussed, including continued efforts to advance the International North–South Transport Corridor. Humanitarian matters were also addressed. The meeting took place in the traditional atmosphere of friendship and constructiveness characteristic of Azerbaijan–Russia interstate dialogue.
On the same day, a statement from the Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan confirmed that the 24th meeting of the Azerbaijani-Russian Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) on Economic Cooperation will be held in Azerbaijan in April. This decision followed talks between Shahin Mustafayev, Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, and a delegation led by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk, who is visiting Baku.
During their discussions, the parties reviewed opportunities to strengthen cooperation across economic, industrial, energy, transport-logistics, and agricultural sectors. They also addressed other pressing matters on the bilateral agenda. Both sides noted with satisfaction the steady growth in trade turnover and highlighted the potential for joint medium- and long-term investment projects.
Issues related to the development of the International North–South Transport Corridor were also discussed, particularly regarding capacity expansion and improvements to transport and logistics infrastructure. The parties emphasized the efficient operation of border checkpoints along the Russia–Azerbaijan state border and stressed the importance of their further modernization.
