Armenia And Azerbaijan Engage Spain On Normalization Process And Regional Cooperation
On August 20, Ararat Mirzoyan, the Foreign Minister of Armenia, held a phone conversation with José Manuel Albares, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, while on the same day Jeyhun Bayramov, the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, also spoke by phone with the Spanish foreign minister. During the conversation with Mirzoyan, the interlocutors discussed efforts to develop Armenia-Spain partnership, including high-level bilateral visits and active cooperation within the EU framework. Mirzoyan expressed gratitude for Spain’s message regarding the agreements reached in Washington D.C. within the Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization process. Emphasizing Armenia’s determination to achieve lasting peace in the South Caucasus, he also highlighted the opportunities that could be created through the unblocking of regional communications.
In the call with Bayramov, Albares congratulated Azerbaijan on progress in the normalization process with Armenia following the US-hosted summit attended by the President of Azerbaijan. The ministers reviewed the current state and prospects of Azerbaijan-Spain and Azerbaijan-EU relations, stressing the importance of cooperation in economic and trade, energy, tourism, humanitarian, and educational fields. They recalled with satisfaction the visit of the Prime Minister of Spain to Azerbaijan within the framework of COP29 and noted that preparations were underway for the next round of political consultations to be held in Baku, following earlier consultations between the foreign ministries in 2024. Regional issues of mutual interest were also discussed during the conversation.
