Armenia Proposes Amendments to National Anthem Law

On November 28, the Armenian government approved draft amendments to the law "On the Anthem of the Republic of Armenia," proposing changes to the anthem's text and performance regulations.
Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport, Daniel Danielyan, presented the proposal, which was initiated by Parliamentary Speaker Alen Simonyan and MPs Sisak Gabrielyan and Taguhi Ghazaryan. The amendments aim to standardize the anthem's official version and expand its mandatory performance requirements.
Under the proposed changes, singing the anthem—currently required in schools and universities—will also become mandatory in colleges and kindergartens. At sports events, the anthem will be performed not only during openings and closings but also at award ceremonies. Additionally, the government will be authorized to establish a shortened version of the anthem based on the revised text.
Danielyan explained that reordering the quatrains is intended to enhance the anthem's thematic progression, emphasizing Armenia's statehood, philosophy of freedom, national flag, and the role of its citizens. Specifically, the final quatrain will become the second, while the second and third quatrains will be repositioned as the third and fourth, respectively.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted his partial or full involvement in the political aspects of drafting the proposed changes.
