Armenia Warns That Iran Tensions Are Negatively Affecting South Caucasus Development

| News, Politics, Armenia

On March 4, Arayik Harutyunyan, the Head of the Office of the Prime Minister of Armenia, stated that the situation surrounding Iran is having a negative impact on the South Caucasus region. Harutyunyan noted that the developments unfolding near Armenia are serious and are already affecting the region’s prospects. "What is happening in the region, located close to Armenia, is quite serious and is having, and will continue to have, a very negative impact on the development of the region," he stated.

According to him, the Armenian authorities have created a special working group tasked with monitoring the situation and reducing possible negative consequences for the country. He emphasized that Armenia maintains close cooperation with Iran, which makes the current escalation in the Middle East particularly significant for bilateral relations. "We have fairly close cooperation across all sectors, and the current situation undoubtedly impacts these processes, particularly economically. We are, of course, doing everything possible to mitigate these consequences," Harutyunyan added. Harutyunyan also emphasized the strategic importance of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) project for Armenia. According to him, Armenian society has not yet fully realized the significance of this initiative for the country’s security and economic development. "I want to emphasize that this is a critically important project from a security and economic perspective. At this stage, I believe we — society, Armenia, and citizens — still don't fully understand how important this route is for Armenia and for its security," he stated.

He explained that within the framework of the project, the US — the world’s largest economy — plans to make significant investments in Armenia’s infrastructure. According to Harutyunyan, such investments will not only bring economic benefits but will also contribute to the protection and development of the country’s infrastructure. Harutyunyan also noted that TRIPP represents one of the limited routes capable of facilitating cargo transportation between east and west. He added that negotiations with the American side and practical work on establishing the TRIPP Development Company are ongoing. "We have made significant progress, and the process is moving at the desired pace. We would like it to move a little faster, but it is developing naturally, and practical work on the ground will begin very soon," Harutyunyan stated.
