Armenian Parliament Speaker: Azerbaijan and Türkiye Expected at EPC Summit in Yerevan

Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan said he expects the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Türkiye to attend the Eighth European Political Community (EPC) Summit, which will be held in Yerevan in 2026.

Speaking to reporters, Simonyan addressed reports claiming that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev does not plan to participate. “We expect that all countries that have regularly taken part will have the opportunity to visit the Republic of Armenia during this important event,” he said, noting that no official statement has been issued suggesting otherwise.

Simonyan said that during a recent meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart, they discussed Baku’s absence from the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly session in Yerevan, emphasizing that Azerbaijan’s non-participation was related to its dispute with Euronest — not with Armenia. “They do not see any problem regarding our cooperation and reciprocal visits,” he added.

He highlighted the need for sustained parliamentary dialogue, including discussion of remaining bilateral issues such as Armenian prisoners and detainees.

Simonyan expressed hope that Azerbaijan will demonstrate willingness to finalize the peace treaty with Armenia. “It is obvious that Armenia has done everything beyond its capacity to ensure peace in the region, and peace — though fragile — has been established,” he said.

The Speaker also noted the unprecedented calm on the border. “It is incredible — we have not fired at each other for almost two years. Nothing like this has happened since independence,” he remarked.

Armenia and Azerbaijan initialed a U.S.-brokered peace agreement on August eight in Washington. Armenia has declared readiness to sign the treaty, while Azerbaijan continues to insist on constitutional changes in Armenia — a condition Yerevan rejects.
