
Azerbaijan Among Countries Targeting Dissidents Globally, Says Human Rights Watch

On February 22, Human Rights Watch published a report titled "We Will Find You," expressing deep concern over the escalating trend of governments carrying out persecutions beyond their borders.
This alarming trend, termed "transnational repression," encompasses a range of oppressive tactics employed by governments against individuals, including but not limited to murders, kidnappings, deportations, consular abuses, and digital attacks. Azerbaijan features prominently in the report as one of the countries known to engage in transnational repression. Other nations identified for such practices include Algeria, Belarus, China, Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and several others.
The report sheds light on instances where governments target dissidents, activists, and political opponents residing abroad, resorting to tactics like surveillance, harassment, and even abduction. Notably, family members and relatives of dissidents abroad also face pressure and persecution as part of transnational repression campaigns.
Human Rights Watch emphasizes that transnational repression severely threatens fundamental rights such as freedom of expression, association, and assembly, instilling fear and inhibiting individuals from exercising their rights.
