Azerbaijan Initiates Legal Proceedings Against Armenia for Environmental Harm

On April 12, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan disclosed that the first official trial of Azerbaijan's claim took place at the Hague Peace Palace within the framework of interstate arbitration under the "Bern Convention on the Protection of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats."
According to the ministry, Azerbaijan initiated the first arbitration process on January 18, 2023, citing "a large amount of available evidence of extensive destruction of the environment committed during the 30-year illegal occupation of the territories of Azerbaijan" by Armenia.
"In 2020, after the liberation of its territories, Azerbaijan revealed terrible evidence of Armenia's destruction of the environment and its failure to protect it. These steps of Armenia caused serious damage to the natural habitat and species of our territories, led to the depletion of natural resources, and destroyed the existing biodiversity," the ministry stated.
Azerbaijan has requested the tribunal to compel Armenia to cease all ongoing violations of the Berne Convention and compensate for the destruction of the environment within the framework of the arbitration process.
