Azerbaijan Reaffirms One-China Policy, Denounces Taiwanese Elections

On January 13, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan said in a press release regarding the elections held in Taiwan that Azerbaijan supports the one-China policy. "Azerbaijan does not recognize the independence of Taiwan and condemns the held elections. Azerbaijan is against interference in China's internal affairs," the ministry statement added.
On the same day, Taiwan held elections for the head of the island's administration and members of the legislative yuan (the highest legislative body). The ruling party's candidate, Lai Ching-te, won the presidential election in Taiwan.
Notably, China's Foreign Ministry and its embassies around the world this weekend warned countries not to support Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and condemned foreign governments congratulating the island's president-elect Lai Ching-te.
