Azerbaijan Summons Russian Ambassador Over SOCAR Facility Strike in Ukraine
On July 6, Mikhail Yevdokimov, the Russian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, was summoned to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where officials lodged a strong protest over a drone strike carried out on July 5 against a SOCAR fuel station in Ukraine's Mykolaiv region. During the meeting, the Azerbaijani side handed the ambassador a note verbale outlining its concerns.
According to the ministry, Azerbaijani officials emphasized that the attack was not an isolated incident. They stated that other SOCAR facilities in Ukraine, including a gas distribution compressor station and an oil depot in Odesa, had previously been damaged by military strikes and other consequences of hostilities, causing significant material losses and injuries to company employees.
The ministry stressed that the recurrence of such incidents, despite previous warnings, suggests that the attacks are being carried out deliberately. Azerbaijani officials also referred to earlier airstrikes that damaged the premises of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Kyiv and the Honorary Consulate in Kharkiv, emphasizing the importance of fully observing the obligations set out in the Vienna Conventions regarding the protection of diplomatic and consular missions.
The Azerbaijani side called on Russia to conduct a comprehensive investigation into all of the incidents, provide explanations regarding the attacks, and ensure full compliance with its international obligations concerning the protection of civilian infrastructure and diplomatic missions.
