Suren Papikyan Receives Iranian Ambassador Mehdi Sobhani
On September 2, Suren Papikyan, the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Armenia, received Mehdi Sobhani, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Armenia, on the occasion of the completion of his diplomatic mission in the country. Papikyan highly appreciated Sobhani’s contribution to strengthening Armenia-Iran relations and expressed gratitude for the effective joint cooperation and significant achievements accomplished during his tenure. The meeting also covered issues related to the bilateral agenda, as well as the latest developments in regional and international security. At the conclusion of the meeting, Minister Papikyan awarded Ambassador Sobhani a departmental medal in recognition of his effective cooperation.
Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan and Vietnam Discuss Defense Cooperation During Hasanov Visit
On September 2, Colonel General Zakir Hasanov, the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan, began an official visit to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. On the same day, Hasanov attended a ceremony at Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and the National Day of Vietnam. The event commemorated Vietnam’s historic struggle for freedom and celebrated the people’s achievements toward national unity and socialist development. On September 3, Hasanov visited the headquarters of the Vietnam People’s Navy and met with its commander, Vice Admiral Tran Thanh Nghiem, to discuss naval cooperation. On September 4, Hasanov met with Pham Minh Chinh, the Prime Minister of Vietnam, and held talks with his Vietnamese counterpart, General Phan Van Giang. The Defense Ministers discussed the current state and prospects of military cooperation, and the meeting concluded with the signing of a Letter of Intent on cooperation in military training between the two countries.
Azerbaijani Delegation Visits Uzbekistan for Military Cooperation Talks
On September 5, the Chief of the International Military Cooperation Department of the Azerbaijan Ministry of Defense led a delegation to Uzbekistan to participate in Staff Talks on Prospects of Cooperation in the Military Field. The meeting in Tashkent focused on the current state and future prospects of military and military-technical cooperation, as well as the draft bilateral military cooperation plan for 2026. During the visit, the Azerbaijani delegation also toured the Chimgan Mountain Training Center and took part in the graduation ceremony of the Mountain Warrior Course, which included a group of servicemen from the Azerbaijan Army.
Local Exercise
On September 6, exercises were conducted in the Navy in line with the current year’s training plan, focusing on the "Organization of the ship’s defense against underwater sabotage" and "Organization of the ship’s struggle for sustainability at anchor". The exercises aimed to train personnel in organizing defense against underwater sabotage and to test the ship’s preparedness for maintaining stability during emergencies at the dock. Practical training included fire response, first aid, and evacuation drills.
Georgia
Local Exercises
On September 1, the "Lone Fighter" course was completed by cadets of the David Agmashenebeli Georgian National Defence Academy, with the graduation ceremony held at the Special Operations Command base in Mukhrovani. The 26-day training aimed to develop individual skills, enhancing future officers’ survival skills and combat readiness. Cadets underwent firearms, tactical, mountain, airmobile, medical, and topographic training, concluding with a 90-kilometer tactical march.
Irakli Chikovani Meets Newly Appointed US Defense Attaché
On September 3, Irakli Chikovani, the Minister of Defense of Georgia and Deputy Prime Minister, met with the newly appointed US Defense Attaché, Colonel Jonathan Adams, and the new Chief of the Office of Defense Cooperation, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Underwood. The discussion focused on bilateral cooperation between Georgia and the United States, as well as future plans for collaboration in the defense sector.
Deputy Minister Explains Changes Under New Defense Code
On September 4, Grigol Giorgadze, the Deputy Minister of Defense of Georgia, briefed the Parliamentary Defense and Security Committee on the reform of the National Military Service of Conscripts under the new Defense Code. Giorgadze explained that from January 1, 2025, conscripts will serve exclusively within the Ministry of Defense system. He noted that new conditions, including salary supplements and improved social benefits, have significantly increased voluntary registration among young people.
