Chechen MP Opposes School Ban on Religious Clothing

On June 3, Chechen Duma MP Adam Delimkhanov stated that Duma MP Speaker Vladislav Davankov's draft law banning religious clothing in schools contradicts the Russian Constitution.
Davankov proposes giving schools the right to ban religious clothing within their walls. "I would like to clarify to Davankov the difference between the niqab and the hijab. The niqab is a female garment that covers the face, while the hijab does not cover the face. The niqab - we ourselves do not approve of it, and as for the hijab - it is a religious obligation of a Muslim woman. If Davankov wants to forbid anyone from fulfilling their religious prescriptions, he directly contradicts the Russian Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion," Delimkhanov said on social media.
He believes that Davankov's initiative could cause a split in society. "I would also like to remind Davankov that in Orthodoxy, a woman is also supposed to wear a headscarf as a symbol of piety, femininity, and humility. If Davankov or anyone else does not understand what religious, traditional values and customs are, we will explain it clearly to him and others," Delimkhanov promised.
