Georgian Authorities Target Turkish Organized Crime Network in Adjara

| News, Security, Georgia

On November 26, two members of the Turkish organized crime group "Barış Boyun" were detained in Adjara. During the operation, the detainees, aged twenty-five and twenty-six, were accused of illegally obtaining and possessing significant quantities of narcotic and psychotropic substances. Detectives searched their residences and seized MDMA, marijuana, pregabalin, and gabapentin. The Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that investigative actions continued with the aim of identifying additional members of the group who might have been present in Georgia.

Notably, Barış Boyun, born in 1984 in Malatya, Turkey, is considered a leading figure in organised crime in Turkey. What started as a local neighbourhood gang in the İstanbul district of Beyoğlu later expanded into a wider criminal organisation with international reach. The group’s criminal activities, according to prosecutors, have included arms trafficking, illegal gambling, and drug trafficking. They also reportedly served as subcontractors for other mafia organisations in the Balkans, carrying out contract killings on demand, broadening their operations beyond Turkey. The group has a reputation for using motorcycle-based "hit teams," a method reportedly inspired by Colombian cartels.
