Georgian Dream Expresses Confidence in Municipal Elections Amidst Political Maneuvering

| News, Politics, Georgia

Leaders of the Georgian Dream party have declared their intention to secure a "100% victory" in the forthcoming local elections scheduled for October. This message of absolute confidence was broadcast across nearly all pro-government television channels, where party leaders also spoke of the perceived treachery of the "Deep State," the Euro-bureaucracy, and the Georgian opposition. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, speaking on the Adjara Public Broadcaster, reiterated this prediction of winning in all 64 local government bodies. He emphasized the party's unity and strength, stating, "The team is united and stronger than ever. The team has a leader, Bidzina Ivanishvili, everyone is united around a common idea and the principles that were laid down in the foundation of the party by its founder, Bidzina Ivanishvili."

In a parallel move, President Mikheil Kavelashvili, whose legitimacy is not recognized by most of the opposition, has once again extended an offer to imprisoned opposition figures. He proposed pardoning eight of their leaders on the condition that they abandon their election boycott and participate in the polls on October 4. The President signaled he is even prepared to overlook being called a "boor" and "Bidzina Ivanishvili's horse" by his opponents to facilitate the deal. This offer was made during an appearance on the Rustavi 2 television channel.

During his interview, Prime Minister Kobakhidze also addressed recent political tensions, stating that authorities were compelled to arrest over 30 participants in protests against the "On Foreign Agents" law as a "preventive" measure. He also commented on the case of journalist Mzia Amaglobeli, who is facing a seven-year prison sentence for slapping a police officer, suggesting she should admit her actions were "not worthy," after which other discussions could follow. Meanwhile, Tbilisi Mayor and the ruling party's Secretary-General, Kakha Kaladze, confirmed his plan to run for re-election, a move previously announced by the Prime Minister. Kaladze noted that campaign preparations are underway and will soon enter an active phase, but he refrained from discussing competitors, stating his focus is on "the challenges and problems that are relevant and worry the residents of Tbilisi."
