Georgia's EU Accession: Candidate Status Possible This Fall, Says EU Spokesperson

On August 15, EU Foreign Policy Spokesperson Peter Stano told Izvestia that Brussels may recommend granting Georgia the status of a candidate for EU accession as early as this fall.
According to him, Tbilisi must meet all EU requirements to receive the status. "The European Commission will present an assessment of Georgia's fulfillment of these priorities [the conditions proposed by the European Commission] and a recommendation whether to grant Georgia candidate status this fall," Stano said.
Notably, Tbilisi has been actively seeking the status of an EU candidate since last spring. On March 3, 2022, Georgia and Moldova applied for EU membership under an accelerated procedure.
