The head of the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maka Botchorishvili, met with the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Great Britain to Georgia, Gareth Ward, the ministry's press service reported. During the dialogue, the head of the Foreign Policy Ministry addressed the sanctions introduced by Great Britain.

"The Minister emphasized that the recent statements and actions of representatives of the executive and legislative authorities of Great Britain, including the introduction of sanctions against Georgian citizens, cast a shadow on the strategic partnership and friendship between Georgia and the United Kingdom and are often aimed at influencing internal political processes in Georgia," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

As a reminder, Great Britain introduced sanctions against senior officials of law enforcement agencies "in response to serious human rights violations during the legal protests that began in 2024." The list included the Prosecutor General, the Minister of Internal Affairs and his deputy, as well as the heads of the Department for Special Assignments.

As reported by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the parties also discussed the issue of "foreign financing." According to the law "On Grants," adopted in an expedited manner, donors cannot finance mass media or non-governmental organizations without government permission.

On June 11, the British Embassy in Georgia issued a statement noting that, due to the uncertainty arising after the adoption of this law, they had to cancel a grant competition related to the elections.

"After discussions with the authorities of Georgia, they informed us that the government decree 'On the Procedure for Approving Grants' has not yet been finalized. Accordingly, there are no mechanisms or timelines for decision-making under the 'Procedure for Approving Grants,'" the embassy’s statement read.

According to the press service of the ministry, they explained that "the process of developing the rules is in its final stage, and all interested parties will be provided with the necessary information immediately."
