Iranian Ambassador Announces New Border Checkpoint to Boost Nakhchivan Connectivity and Trade
On November 4, Mojtaba Demirchilou, the Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, stated that Azerbaijan’s victory in the Second Karabakh War had created new opportunities for expanding cooperation between Baku and Tehran. During his visit to Nakhchivan, Demirchilou emphasized the exclave’s special role in strengthening bilateral relations. He recalled that "during the visit of national leader Heydar Aliyev to Iran in 1992, very important agreements were reached, which laid the foundation for the active development of cooperation between our countries." The ambassador noted that the current stage of Azerbaijan–Iran relations offered broad prospects and added, "Azerbaijan’s victory and the liberation of its previously occupied lands have created new opportunities. We must use this potential effectively to bring our peoples even closer and deepen cooperation between our two brotherly and friendly nations."
Demirchilou underlined that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s recent visits to Azerbaijan had produced significant results in strengthening bilateral relations. He highlighted the growing friendship between the leaders of the two countries, noting, "Over the past few months, President Pezeshkian has visited Azerbaijan twice — first to Baku and later to Khankandi. As a result of these visits and meetings, very positive agreements were reached, further reinforcing our relations. These understandings cover economic as well as political and other areas. We believe these relations will continue to develop in the future."
The ambassador also announced that a new checkpoint would open on the Azerbaijani–Iranian border in the coming months. He explained that four checkpoints currently operate between the two countries — Astara, Bilasuvar, Julfa, and Shakhtakhti-Poldasht — and that the fifth one would be established in the Aghband-Kalala region. "The opening of the fifth checkpoint is connected to the construction of a new bridge in the Aghband-Kalala region. Work in this direction will be completed by the end of December this year. Preparatory work for the checkpoint is also underway," he stated. Demirchilou emphasized that the commissioning of this checkpoint and bridge would create new opportunities to expand economic relations between Azerbaijan and Iran and facilitate Nakhchivan’s connection with other regions of Azerbaijan.
