Kobakhidze Confirms Chemicals Were Mixed into Water Cannons
On December 3, Irakli Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister of Georgia, stated during a briefing at the government administration that water cannons used to disperse the 2024 protests contained an added substance, while dismissing the use of camite. Kobakhidze emphasized that a chemical had indeed been mixed into the water but stressed that "what matters is whether this substance was banned," adding that the Interior Ministry had already confirmed that camite had never been used or purchased.
He acknowledged that the BBC investigation correctly referenced the chemical code UN 3439 but noted that the classification covered "dozens" of chemicals, including camite, and that many of the substances under this code were not prohibited.
Kobakhidze stated that the BBC report was "not only a falsehood but also a cheap provocation planned by foreign intelligence services," claiming that its purpose was twofold: to create grounds for reigniting protests that had "completely died down" and to continue "blackmailing the Georgian people and their elected government". He asserted that the report would not achieve these goals.
He further stated that the allegations would be challenged both domestically and internationally, noting: "We plan, alongside conducting an investigation, to appeal to the British communications regulator and, if necessary, to international judicial bodies, so that the BBC is held properly accountable and compelled to retract false information spread with the hallmark of intelligence services".
