Kobakhidze Highlights Rapid Growth in Partnership with China Amid New Agreement and Expanding Global Connectivity

| News, Politics, Georgia

On June 10, Irakli Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister of Georgia, stated that Georgia’s strategic partnership with China is not merely formal but produces concrete outcomes for both sides. Kobakhidze emphasized that the partnership is based on mutual respect and equality, noting: "It is absolutely clear that our strategic partnership with China is not merely a partnership on paper, but one that is reflected in tangible benefits for both countries. This is exactly what an exemplary strategic partnership between two nations should look like."

He underlined that China treats Georgia as an equal partner, describing this approach as particularly significant in the context of what he called deficiencies in the current global political environment. The Prime Minister noted that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Georgia and China had been signed the previous day, calling it an event of "exceptional importance" for the country’s political and economic development. He stated that relations between the two states have developed rapidly since the initial strategic partnership agreement three years ago. Kobakhidze highlighted an increase in high-level exchanges, saying that in the past six months the Prime Minister of Georgia, the Speaker of Parliament, and five ministers had visited China, each focused on achieving concrete outcomes. He added that since 2023, 14 major international agreements had been signed between the two countries, with six more in preparation.

He also pointed to rising economic indicators, stating that trade turnover with China increased by 17% in 2024, by 21% in 2025, and by 45% in the first four months of 2026. According to him, China now ranks third among Georgia’s trading partners and second in exports of Georgian goods, with exports to China reportedly tripling in January-April compared to the previous year. Kobakhidze further referenced developments in transport and logistics cooperation, including agreements on the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route and the China-Europe Railway Express, as well as expanded freight permit exchanges and increased activity along the Middle Corridor. He also noted progress in aviation and tourism links, including new and expanded direct flights between Georgian cities and Chinese destinations, and increasing passenger traffic. According to Kobakhidze, Chinese tourist arrivals to Georgia rose significantly in 2024 and 2025, while three Chinese airlines are currently operating in the Georgian market.

In addition, he referred to expanding cooperation in education, including plans for a memorandum to enhance university exchanges, youth programs, and Chinese-language education in Georgia. Kobakhidze expressed gratitude to Chinese officials, including President Xi Jinping, and Georgian officials involved in the process, stating that the agreement will mark a new stage in bilateral relations and bring further political and economic benefits. He also commented on Georgia’s relations with the United States, stating that past cooperation had been "a strategic partnership on paper" without substantive content, while contrasting it with the cooperation with China. He said Georgia had communicated this assessment to US State Department representatives and called for a more substantive approach in future relations.

Referring to broader geopolitical issues, Kobakhidze said Georgia remains highly resilient despite its size and challenges, including territorial occupation, and emphasized that the country has strengthened its sovereignty over the past years by resisting external pressure.
