Péter Magyar Pledges Continued Good Relations with Georgia
On April 13, Péter Magyar, the Hungarian Prime Minister-in-waiting, pledged to maintain what he described as "good relations" with Georgia. Responding at a press conference to a question regarding whether Budapest would sustain ties with Tbilisi and seek closer cooperation, Magyar stated, "Obviously, we will continue good relations with Georgia."
He emphasized that the existence of strong ties between Orbán’s administration and various countries, including Georgia, would not result in diminished engagement under the incoming government. "The fact that Viktor Orbán’s government had strong ties with a country in the Balkans or anywhere else does not mean that Hungary will have less relations with the same country," Magyar stated.
Magyar also noted that Hungary intends to improve relations where they may have previously been weaker, stressing the importance of cooperation and mutual benefit. "If Hungary had bad relations with the country, we will improve that, because it is in our shared interest to work together, to cooperate, and to prosper together," he added.
Expressing openness to future engagement, he remarked, "I am happy to visit you in Tbilisi or elsewhere, and I’m looking forward to working with you." He further underscored a commitment to non-interference in domestic affairs, stating that Hungary would not attempt to influence political processes abroad. "We are not going to interfere with the internal affairs of other countries, we will not try to influence elections in your country or North Macedonia or anywhere," Magyar emphasized, adding, "That’s not our style, and that is not a job of any European government. Everyone is elected to support and represent the electorate of that country."
