Rubio Spoke to Kobakhidze

On March 30, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. According to State Department Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott, the two leaders discussed areas of mutual interest, including security in the Caucasus and the Black Sea region. Irakli Kobakhidze noted on the social network X that he had a productive conversation, emphasizing the importance of reinvigorating the partnership and strengthening Georgia’s role as a key partner in the South Caucasus.

This follows a face-to-face meeting in February between Marco Rubio and Mikheil Kavelashvili, Georgia’s sixth president, during the Winter Olympics in Milan. “Marco Rubio greeted me,” Mikheil Kavelashvili later remarked. He expanded on this during an interview with Imedi on February 8: “He said directly that the previous Monday we had discussions on exactly this topic and there was so much negativity that they need time to delve into it all, analyze everything, and establish appropriate relations with Georgia, as befits their country. He also stated that they will assemble a technical group to facilitate a restart of our relations from a clean slate.”

In November 2024, the United States suspended its multi-year strategic partnership with Georgia. The State Department announced this decision on November 30, 2024, after the Georgian Dream government voted two days earlier to remove the opening of EU accession negotiations from the agenda until the end of 2028. This move triggered widespread protests, which the government met with force. While the Georgian Dream government hoped that President Trump would reverse the Biden administration’s policy, the sanctions imposed by the United States remain in place.

Recently, government representatives have held meetings in the United States. On March 26, Irakli Kobakhidze stated that the government remains optimistic that the strategic partnership with the United States will be restored. "The only concrete criterion for us, which will serve as proof that we are moving to a new stage in our relations, is the renewal of the strategic partnership... This must be a strategic partnership with real, tangible results; we are completely focused on this and we say this openly, publicly, and behind closed doors with our American partners... We hope that this will happen. We will do everything within our power to achieve this," said Irakli Kobakhidze.
