Russia Prepares Financial Aid for Flood Victims in Dagestan
On April 7, Anton Siluanov, the Head of the Russian Ministry of Finance, announced during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin that financial aid will be promptly allocated to those affected by flooding in Dagestan.
He stated that assistance will be delivered immediately after authorities complete the assessment of damages and determine the number of victims. "After determining the damage assessment, the extent of damage to infrastructure and residential buildings, and the list of affected citizens, we will promptly provide financial support to overcome the consequences of the emergency," Siluanov stated.
Recently, heavy flooding has struck Dagestan following days of intense rainfall, leaving at least six people dead and thousands affected. Authorities say the disaster, triggered by record precipitation and melting snow, has inundated more than 2,000 homes and forced over 4,000 residents to evacuate after a dam burst in the Derbent district.
Emergency services reported widespread damage to infrastructure, including collapsed buildings, destroyed roads, and disruptions to electricity and water supply. In the capital, Makhachkala, a state of emergency was declared as hundreds of thousands of people were left without power at the peak of the crisis. Officials estimate the total damage has exceeded 1 billion rubles (≈ €10,900,000), while rescue operations and evacuations continue. The floods, described as among the worst in decades, have also sparked criticism from residents over infrastructure failures and the authorities’ response.
