Separatist Abkhazia’s De-facto Ruler Rules out Extradition to Russia
The President of the self-proclaimed Republic of Abkhazia, Badra Gunba, has ruled out extraditing Abkhaz opposition figures facing criminal charges in Russia to Moscow. Gunba stated that regardless of the crime their citizen is suspected of committing, their actions must be investigated by the competent authorities of Abkhazia. "No citizen of Abkhazia will be extradited to a foreign state under any circumstances. Period! I see no point in further discussing or speculating on this issue," he said.
Regarding the activities of three Russian citizens in Abkhazia, which "have generated significant media attention," Gunba noted that "the prosecutor's office is conducting a comprehensive investigation". According to the Abkhaz leader, "foreign citizens visiting Abkhazia must abide by the Constitution of Abkhazia and respect the sovereignty and traditions of the people". He added that "foreign citizens who disrespect our Constitution and laws will be banned from entering the country in accordance with established procedures".
The issue involves Abkhazian politicians Kana Kvarchia, Eshsou Kakalia, and Khina Dumaa, who are accused of grand larceny, totaling 1,975,000 rubles, against three Russian citizens (Russian political strategists). The opposition figures have been placed on the federal wanted list.
