Slovenia Endorses Energy Cooperation with Azerbaijan on Renewables, Hydrogen, and Gas Diversification
Slovenia’s Ministry of Environment, Climate and Energy announced on July 29 its support for the Black Sea Energy submarine power cable project and is considering ways to participate. The ministry identified green energy as a highly promising area for cooperation with Azerbaijan. A key goal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two countries' energy ministries on April 4, 2025, is to promote cooperation in renewable energy and clean technologies, including hydrogen. Slovenia also encourages its companies to invest in renewable energy sources in Azerbaijan.
A ministry source described Azerbaijan as a key partner for energy security and diversifying natural gas supplies, aiming to ensure uninterrupted deliveries through the Southern Gas Corridor. While most of Slovenia's gas currently comes from Algeria, the ministry stated it "places high importance on deepening its energy partnership with Azerbaijan". The MoU signed with Azerbaijan's Ministry of Energy is a framework agreement designed to strengthen cooperation in five key areas, without a specific timeline. Its primary objectives are to foster close ties between national gas companies SOCAR and Geoplin, enhance energy security via the Southern Gas Corridor, develop renewable energy and clean technologies, and support the digitalization of energy systems.
