SOCAR Announces Extension of Gas Deliveries to Nakhchivan Through Iran
On August 26, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) announced that an agreement had been reached to extend the delivery of natural gas to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic through Iranian territory. SOCAR stated that since the current contract is set to expire this year, a new agreement has been concluded and is now at the signing stage.
Official data showed that Nakhchivan's annual gas demand ranged between 260 and 300 million cubic meters. To meet this demand, Azerbaijan signed a swap-based agreement with Iran in 2005, under which Iran supplies gas from Julfa to Nakhchivan while receiving an equivalent volume of gas from Azerbaijan via Astara. According to SOCAR, 188.5 million cubic meters of gas were transported to Nakhchivan through Iran between January 1 and August 21, 2025. Deliveries along this route have continued since 2006.
