Steve Witkoff Relies on Turkey for Regional Guidance on Armenia, Azerbaijan, And Ukraine
On September 25, during the Concordia Summit in New York, in a panel titled "Voices of Diplomacy: Shaping America’s Role in the World," US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff stated that he frequently relies on Turkey for guidance on issues concerning Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Ukraine. Witkoff appeared alongside Tom Barrack, the US Ambassador to Turkey, and acknowledged that he often consulted Turkish officials for regional expertise. He emphasized that Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and National Intelligence Organization chief Ibrahim Kalin are "important people" in these matters, with communications frequently facilitated through Barrack. "I might end up facing a problem in Azerbaijan or Armenia, or it could be a Ukrainian issue," Witkoff stated. "The gentlemen I’m referring to in Türkiye are experts in these areas, and I am encouraged by the Trump administration—this is how it works. For example, I call Tom and ask, ‘What is Ibrahim’s opinion on this issue?’ I could give many similar examples." He added that these contacts had led to "numerous examples of success." During the same panel, Tom Barrack, the US Ambassador to Turkey, stated that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan "likes Steve Witkoff" and added that former [and current] US President Donald Trump had "given legitimacy to Erdoğan."
