Strong Armenia Alleges Intimidation, Misuse of Administrative Resources in Campaign
The Strong Armenia alliance has accused authorities of intimidation and misuse of administrative resources during the parliamentary campaign, saying hundreds of its supporters were detained ahead of the June 7 vote.
Party representative Gohar Meloyan said about 700 people linked to the alliance were arrested or detained in the pre-election period. “Among them, elderly women who came and registered as members of the ‘Strong Armenia’ party,” Meloyan said, alleging that police entered homes early in the morning, took people in for questioning, and later released them. The aim, she said, was “to create an atmosphere of fear, especially in rural communities.”
Meloyan also said the alliance had received reports of pressure on public sector employees and other voters through administrative resources.
“People were forced to go vote for the government, take a photo of the ballot, and take out the ballot of our political force as proof that these people did not vote for us,” she alleged.
The ruling Civil Contract rejected the accusations of political persecution, maintaining that police actions targeted only individuals suspected of breaking the law. Authorities have previously said that arrests and detentions during the election period stemmed from alleged legal violations rather than political affiliation.
