Tbilisi Mayor Threatens To Expel EU Ambassador; EU Responds

| News, Politics, Georgia

On July 24, Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi, stated he would expel EU Ambassador Paweł Herczyński if he had the authority to do so. His comments were a reaction to the ambassador's assertion that Georgia could return to its European integration path only by "stopping repression," releasing those unjustly detained, and repealing recent controversial laws. Kaladze declared that the ambassador "has no right to interfere in the country’s internal political affairs" and must refrain from making statements "filled with lies and incite extremism."

The European Union responded on July 25, strongly rejecting and condemning what it called "disinformation and baseless accusations" from the Georgian Dream authorities. An EU spokesperson stated that false claims about the EU seeking to destabilize Georgia were a "deliberate attempt to mislead the public." The EU also condemned the "personal attacks" against Ambassador Herczyński, affirming he enjoys the bloc’s "full trust and support." The EU called on all political actors in Georgia to refrain from disinformation and inflammatory attacks.
