Cartu Bank Sues TV Pirveli Over Claims Linking It to Ivanishvili

| News, Politics, Georgia

On July 29, Cartu Bank, founded by Bidzina Ivanishvili, filed a lawsuit against the opposition-leaning TV Pirveli for describing the bank as being under Ivanishvili’s control. TV Pirveli had reported that Cartu Bank initiated legal proceedings to prohibit the channel from labeling it as "Ivanishvili’s bank" or "the oligarch’s bank". The broadcaster added that the complaint asserted, "Cartu has no connection with Ivanishvili".

In its legal filing, Cartu Bank stated that the TV Pirveli report intended "to mislead the public and create false perceptions that Cartu Bank represents Bidzina Ivanishvili’s property," emphasizing that such claims politicized the institution. The bank argued that it was being damaged as a commercial organization by "detached-from-reality, distorted, and false accusations," which it claimed were harmful to its professional reputation. The lawsuit specifically concerns TV Pirveli’s report on a European Parliament resolution by the European People’s Party, which called for sanctions against Ivanishvili and the removal of Cartu Bank from the SWIFT international payment system. According to the bank, the channel's portrayal of it as a "non-transparent" institution amounted to "clear defamation".
