Russian Official: "We Need to Create Our Own Monte Carlo and Cannes in Abkhazia"

On April 4, Andrey Kartapolov, Chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on Defense and Security, emphasized Russia’s commitment to its loyal ally in the Transcaucasus, pledging continued military and technical cooperation with the de facto Republic of Abkhazia.
In an interview, Kartapolov highlighted the deepening military ties between Russia and Abkhazia, stating, "As for relations within the framework of military cooperation, they are, of course, developing." He noted existing agreements to equip and modernize Abkhazia’s armed forces. Kartapolov also acknowledged the participation of Abkhazian natives in Russia’s war against Ukraine, reporting that over 50 Abkhazian soldiers have lost their lives. He referenced a speech by Sergey Vladilenovich Kiriyenko at Badra Gunba’s inauguration, which honored these sacrifices, saying, "We see it, we honor it, and we deeply respect the Abkhazian people for this."
Beyond military collaboration, Kartapolov underscored the multifaceted nature of Russian-Abkhazian relations, spanning security, economic partnerships, and tourism. He praised Gagra’s natural beauty, likening it to Monte Carlo, and called for developing similar tourist hubs in Abkhazia: "We need to create our own Monte Carlo and Cannes. The Russian tourist is a grateful one—he votes with rubles."
Kartapolov also discussed infrastructure initiatives to boost Abkhazia’s connectivity, including the reconstruction of border checkpoints—set for completion by 2028—which will double their capacity. He further stressed the importance of reopening Sukhumi airport and enhancing passenger flows via sea and rail, all of which, he argued, would strengthen Abkhazia’s economy.
